What is cough exactly? Cough is an explosive release of air from the lungs which is a reflex action of the air passages (bronchi). Coughs are designed to clear the airways of obstructions such as dust, pollen or phlegm. As such coughing is useful and should not be suppressed by cough suppressants.
There are either too much or too little mucus in the air passages and both conditions might cause coughing. The first results in productive cough or phlegm cough, the second irritating, dry coughs.
Most common causes of coughs includes:
There are many serious health problems which include coughing among different other symptoms. Pneumonia, asthma, whooping cough, croup, heart failure, ailments of the vocal cords, laryngitis etc are all accompanied by coughing. Outside pressure on the windpipe caused by enlarged lymph nodes or thyroid may also cause coughing. If your cough troubles you mainly after meals or while lying down your problem might be acid reflux. Stomach acids back up into your lower oesophagus, irritating the delicate tissue - which can lead to dry coughing. Therefore coughing after eating combined with night cough indicates acid reflux in many cases.
Coughing can be long lasting, for several weeks or months which is called chronic cough or persistent cough. If coughing lasts only for a couple of days or one week it is called acute cough.
Coughs can be unproductive, irritating dry cough, without coughing up any mucus or phlegm. On the other hand it can be a wet, productive cough that brings up mucus or phlegm of different colour and amount. The colour of phlegm can vary in shade from white to green. Coloured mucus generally indicates a bacterial infection. If the mucus is white, gray or transparent it can be an allergic cough or viral infection or just the self cleaning act of the airways.
Most coughs clear up on their own within a week to 10 days. But if your lasts more than 4 weeks or is accompanied with other symptoms see your doctor. Visit a medical specialist sooner if the cough affects a baby or a weak elderly person.

Apple Cider Vinegar can be mixed with equal amounts of honey which makes a nice cough syrup. If you like experiencing you may add to ACV-honey mixture some cayenne pepper and/or crushed garlic and/or lemon juice and/or ginger juice. Chest poultice for chronic dry cough: mustard seed flour wrap
Mustard poultice is able to loosen up chest congestion and stop coughing. Mix 1 teaspoon of mustard seed powder (preferably freshly ground) and 2 teaspoons of flour in a bowl. Add one egg white and make a paste with the ingredients. You can add some water to make the paste thinner if needed. Spread the paste on a tea towel or white handkerchief (dye free if possible) and fold towel in half. Alternatively you can apply the paste between two pieces of gauze. Protect you skin with a layer of petroleum jelly as mustard can burn your skin. Place the poultice on your chest or to make it more effective also onto your back in the lung region. Fix it with a cotton cloth and woolen scarf in order to keep it warm. Lie down dressed warmly and keep the poultice on for 10-15 minutes. Remove the poultice earlier if your skin becomes too red or irritated. You may repeat the poultice daily for 3-5 days.
